There’s never a dull moment when it comes to the biggest fight sports star in the world – Conor “Notorious” McGregor. From boxing and MMA to the WWE, McGregor’s name continues to swirl with rumors of potential fights and appearances. The latest Notorious buzz has to do with his next potential UFC opponent and his affinity for WWE superstar Becky Lynch. Both scenarios are causing quite the stir on social media and with mainstream media outlets.
Who Will McGregor Fight Next in the UFC?
Before we get to McGregor and the WWE, his immediate UFC future is unclear at the moment. However, that doesn’t mean he’s without potential opponents. In fact, it seems like after every UFC event, there’s a fighter calling out McGregor. That’s what happens when you are the sport’s biggest star. Even a loss to Nurmagomedov hasn’t dimmed the brightness of McGregor’s star power. With that said, there appears to be a line forming as to who will fight McGregor next. What we do know, one of those fighters won’t be Khabib Nurmagomedov as Dana White wants to put the champ in a fight against Tony Ferguson. With that said, let’s look at the potential opponents for McGregor:
Donald Cerrone: “The Cowboy” is still a very popular fighter in the UFC and with MMA fans. He continues to prove doubters wrong every time they think his career is finished. Cerrone (34-11) has won more UFC fights than any other combatant in the history of the sport. Furthermore, he’s looking at coming down to the lightweight division to take on McGregor.
Cerrone made the following comments about a potential fight against McGregor:
“I think [McGregor’s] side is interested in it, I know I’m very interested, and for the UFC, that’s a money fight. I don’t see why he would turn the fight down. I’m interested to see how it all plays out. I’m pretty sure Conor and I will be meeting in the Octagon soon.”
The Cowboy will take on Alexander Hernandez (10-1) at the first UFC event on ESPN. After that, Cerrone wants McGregor and/or a title fight.
Anderson Silva: The legendary MMA fighter plans on fighting three more times and he wants one of those contests to come against Conor McGregor. Silva talked about what he wants to accomplish in the final fights of his career and one of those challenges is to take on McGregor:
“I say let’s go do it. 180 (pounds) is the perfect weight for me, I think it’s good for McGregor, and let’s go do it because that’s amazing. That’s for the fans.”
The highest McGregor has ever fought at is 170 pounds. Silva wants him to put on 10 more pounds for a fight. I find this to be a bit too much. The only way these two ever step inside the octagon is for a title and at 170 or lower.
Al Iaquinta: Just defeated the highly touted Kevin Lee in a lightweight bout that has raised Al’s stock. In fact, even Khabib Nurmagomedov took to social media to recognize Iaquinta’s recent success. Remember, Iaquinta hung with Khabib for the full 5 rounds despite stepping in on very short notice.
With that said, he’s become one of the top fighters in the lightweight division and could be a suitable candidate for McGregor. Al’s trainer Ray Longo made the following comments about a potential fight against McGregor: “I’d really like to see him fight Conor next. I don’t think Conor deserves the Khabib rematch at all. It looks like they’re going to give Ferguson Khabib, which is 100 percent fair. That makes fair sense, not everything is fair sense, it’s money sense.”
I believe “Raging Al” makes a lot of sense for McGregor’s next opponent. The winner of that bout can take on the winner of Ferguson vs Nurmagomedov for the title. It would solidify the lightweight division and put four of the UFC’s top fighters in line to face each other. If Conor and Khabib win then they could have the highly anticipated rematch.
If for some reason this doesn’t work out with the fighters and the UFC shot callers then I would love to see McGregor take on Cerrone.
Will McGregor Appear at WrestleMania 35?
Over the last few months, WWE superstar Becky Lynch and Conor McGregor have formed a friendship on social media. Lynch has become one of the WWE’s biggest stars and her popularity is growing outside of the sports entertainment industry as well. With that said, Lynch has brought up the idea of McGregor coming to New York in the spring and helping her out. That’s obviously a hint at Lynch wanting Conor to make an appearance at WrestleMania 35.
Becky is currently embroiled in a big feud with Ronda Rousey, the former UFC megastar. Having Conor McGregor in Lynch’s corner just makes perfect sense. But, Ronda and Conor might not be the only UFC stars to appear at WM 35.
UFC welterweight Colby Covington is a huge WWE fan and an associate of Bobby Lashley, who’s a former WWE champ and current star. Covington told BJPenn.com that he wants to team up with Ronda Rousey to take on Lynch and McGregor at WM 35:
“Hopefully I can go over there and be a tag team partner with her. I see that Becky Lynch over there was asking [to be] Conor McGregor’s tag team partner so maybe me and Ronda can go beat up on Becky Lynch and Conor McGregor. Name a better tag team. You’re not going to name a better tag team than me and Ronda. We will destroy.”
If the WWE can swing a match like this then I guarantee they will. Unfortunately, the UFC might not let this happen. Covington and McGregor aren’t the only UFC fighters who have expressed interest in the WWE. Obviously Brock Lesnar and CM Punk are associated with WWE, but UFC’s two-division champ Daniel Cormier has also expressed an interest in going over there after his career comes to an end next year.
As for Lynch and McGregor, Conor recently sent his new pal a few bottles of his Proper Twelve whiskey. Becky took to social media to thank her potential future tag-team partner.
Final Words on McGregor
Two months ago, all of the McGregor future bets were just about a potential rematch with Nurmagomedov. But, now, the only future bet for Conor is a potential fight against Cerrone. Currently, MyBookie has McGregor listed as a -185 favorite over Cerrone who is a +150 underdog.
I think it’s time for online betting sites to start listing a McGregor WWE future bet. MyBookie has future WWE bets for The Rock and Hulk Hogan appearing at WrestleMania 35. So, why not one for McGregor?
WrestleMania is one of the largest sporting events in the world. It’s the perfect stage for a personality like Conor McGregor. If I were handicapping this possible appearance: Yes he appears (+1000) and No he won’t appear (-2500).
