The Ultimate Fighting Championship is the most successful mixed martial arts promotion in the world and easily carries the credit of bring the sport of MMA to the spotlight. With over 250 fighters on contract in various countries all around the world, it’s creating new fighters and making fighter’s dreams come true everyday. Almost every fighter in every weight class that is currently on the top ten counts are contracted by the UFC. With legendary fighters such as Anderson Silva, George St. Pierre, Randy Couture, and Jon Jones all playing a part in the UFC, it is hard to think that any other promotion could even come close to touching them.
Well, here’s what comes with any major professional sport promotion. The idea that there may be corruption or cheating within mixed martial arts. Being at the top of the sport promotion world is a double-edged sword. On the positive side, the UFC has a huge following, an extremely lucrative business, and first crack at the best fighters in the world. The other side, the more disappointing side, is that the sport has become so big that some people will do anything to get in. This unfortunately has had a huge kickback on not only the UFC, but on the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. Recently, controversy has spread with some high-profile mixed martial artists failing their steroid tests. This is a huge deal because it portrays a poor image for the sport and can significantly skew the results of a fight.
The other reason the Ultimate Fighting Championshop’s legitimacy has been called into the question is that it seems like the promotion has recently been consumed by the need to appease the drama that has been thrust upon it by certain fighters. The fighter that has come into this spotlight recently is Chael Sonnen. Now personally not taking anything away from his fighting ability inside the cage, he’s a very smart, well educated individual who has used his speaking abilities more so than his actual fighting abilities in order to get title shots. Now there are a few more variables that come into play when seeing what happened for him to get a title shot but it still brings an unwanted light to the sport.
The choice is entirely up to the reader for to decide. The true thing though is that the UFC has paved the way for other MMA promotions to start making a run at trying to knock them off the top spot and competition between these will not only make the organization better, but also the sport.
